Model Performance Indicators (MPIs)

Teachers can find effective ways to ESOL-ize their lessons by understanding WIDA's framework to drive both teaching and learning effective ways.

The Basics of a Standard
Picture

Each standard we teach can be divided into three distinct parts:
Language Function
Content
Support

Language Function

The first part of the standard refers to how the ELs will process or produce language, depending on the  proficiencies in the four domains:

Listening, Speaking, Reading, or Writing

Students can show understanding of the standards through each of the domains differently.

For example, a reading assignment differs from a speaking assignment, but teachers can find out what students understand through distinct language functions.

The Language Objective Chart provides examples of the action verbs with each of the four domains.

Content

Each subject area has specific content to be learned that has been established by state or national standards.

The content must be grade-level and content appropriate for all classes.

WIDA and the State of Georgia assert that language development should be integrated with content instruction and assessment through meaningful and authentic contexts.

Support

After the language domain has been determined, the teacher must also decide the support the student needs based on proficiency levels for the appropriate domain.

The amount of support that an EL receives can vary based on the domain and the proficiency levels.

WIDA classifies support into three separate categories and provides examples:

Sensory: support that is from real life that can be experienced through the senses

Graphic: support that is visually based into categories

Interactive: support that involves other students or Internet programs that can assist
